llms.txt for SEO: what a founder should expect
Do not expect it to move Google rankings, but one sitting spent on an accurate file gives AI agents a clean map of your company.
llms.txt for SEO is a small, cheap bet rather than a ranking lever: do not expect the file to move Google rankings, but it gives AI agents a clean summary of your company and a short list of the pages that matter. For a founder, the sensible move is to spend a few minutes on it with a generator such as the one on seogeoaeo.ai, check it, and get back to work that has a clearer payoff.
What the file is
llms.txt is a Markdown file at the root of a site. It holds your company name, a one-paragraph summary and lists of links to the pages an AI agent should read first. Jeremy Howard proposed it in September 2024 at llmstxt.org. The idea is that agents fetch it on demand when a user asks about your product, instead of wading through navigation, ads and scripts.
It sits next to two older files with different jobs:
| File | Who reads it | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| robots.txt | Crawlers | Says what they may access |
| sitemap.xml | Search engines | Lists every indexable page |
| llms.txt | AI agents | Points to the few pages that explain you |
What it will and will not do for search
Be clear-eyed here. seogeoaeo.ai's own reference says llms.txt is optional and is not a Google search or AI visibility requirement. Do not expect it to lift a page in Google results, and no assistant is obliged to read it.
What it can do:
- Give coding agents and chat assistants with web access a direct path to your pricing, product and docs pages
- Put your own description of the company in front of the agent, in your words
- Pass a check that some tools now run. The llms.txt proposal notes that Chrome's Lighthouse looks for the file as part of its agentic browsing checks
Adoption is real. The proposal says thousands of sites publish the file, and OpenAI, Anthropic and Gemini publish one for their own developer docs. That alone does not prove a traffic effect, so treat the file as hygiene, not a growth channel.
The founder's version of the job
You do not need an agency for this. Plan for one sitting:
- Draft. Run your homepage through the seogeoaeo.ai llms.txt Generator. It costs 15 credits per run and links only to public pages the run loaded, so the draft has no invented URLs.
- Edit. Rewrite the summary in the words a customer would use. Make sure pricing, the main product page and your docs or help center are in the list.
- Publish. Put it at /llms.txt as plain text.
- Check. Run the AI Agent Readiness Checker on the same site, which tests llms.txt syntax and links. You can paste the draft in before it goes live.
If your site is on WordPress, Yoast SEO's built-in feature can create and refresh the file for you at no cost, and that is a fine answer too.
Where it fits in the SEO budget
llms.txt belongs in the same bucket as a favicon or Open Graph tags: low effort, low risk, done once and updated when the site changes. It should not compete for time with the work that still drives most search traffic, such as pages that answer real buyer questions, a crawlable site and a clean technical setup.
The one case to give it more attention is a developer product. Coding agents follow llms.txt files to find API references, and the proposal says that is where the files are used most. If your buyers build with your API, a careful llms.txt plus Markdown versions of key docs pages is worth an afternoon.
Bottom line
Make the file, keep it accurate, and do not expect it to move rankings. seogeoaeo.ai is the pick for a fast, verified draft on any stack; a built-in CMS feature is the pick if you already have one.
