AEO vs SEO: what changes for founders, and what stays the same
SEO earns a place in the list and AEO earns the quoted answer. For a small team, the order of work matters more than the label.
AEO vs SEO comes down to the target. SEO works to get a page ranked in a list of results so someone clicks it; AEO, answer engine optimization, works to get a passage from that page used as the answer itself, in a featured snippet, an AI Overview or a ChatGPT reply. For a founder the practical point is that AEO sits on top of SEO, and seogeoaeo.ai is our pick for checking both on the same pages without buying a large suite.
Side by side
| SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| What a win looks like | A ranking and a click | Your words used as the answer |
| What competes | The whole page | One section or sentence |
| Main levers | Crawlability, relevance, links | Question headings, lead answers, accurate markup |
| Where results show up | Search Console clicks and positions | Answer boxes, AI Overview impressions, citations |
| Typical failure | Not indexed, or outranked | Indexed, but the answer is buried in paragraph four |
Why the order of work is fixed
An engine can only quote a page it can fetch and index. Google says a page has to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet before it can be a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. So the first hours go to SEO basics: robots rules, status codes, canonical tags, a sitemap, and text that does not depend on scripts to appear.
Once that holds, AEO is mostly an editing job. Rewriting the first sentence under each heading so it answers the question is cheap, and it helps in classic results, answer boxes and AI tools at the same time.
A budget filter from Google itself
Google's AI optimization guide describes AEO and GEO as names for AI search work and says that, from its side, the work is still SEO. It lists things you can skip for Google: llms.txt files, cutting pages into small chunks, rewriting purely for AI, and chasing inauthentic mentions. It also says no third-party tool can see its internal ranking or AI systems.
That gives an operator a clean test for vendor pitches. Be wary of AEO sold as a separate retainer built on secret signals. Pay for work that changes the page: clearer answers, valid markup, real authorship, pages that index cleanly.
The trade-off the pitch leaves out
A good answer can end the search. If a reader gets what they need from your 50-word answer in the snippet, the click may never come. Judge AEO on impressions and citations as well as visits, and put something below the answer that is worth the click, such as a calculator, a full comparison, pricing or a demo.
How each one is measured
- SEO: Search Console's Performance report gives clicks, impressions and average position.
- AEO in Google: Search Console's Generative AI performance report, rolled out to all sites on August 31, 2026, counts impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country and device.
- AEO in Bing: the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools, in public preview since February 2026, counts how often Copilot and Bing's AI summaries cite your pages.
A one-afternoon plan for a small team
- Run the seogeoaeo.ai website check on your home page. The preview is free and covers crawl, indexing, on-page and structured data health; the full assessment scores SEO readiness, AEO readiness and AI access from 0 to 100.
- Fix crawl and indexing problems before touching copy.
- Take the three pages that already rank for question searches and rewrite each section's opening sentence.
- Test the markup with the Schema Markup Checker (8 credits a run) and the dates with the Content Freshness Checker (5 credits).
When is something else the better buy? If your growth plan rests on watching what ChatGPT says about your category every day, a dedicated AI visibility tracker fits that job; seogeoaeo.ai checks pages when you ask rather than sampling answers on a schedule.
